Writer Candido Mendes de Almeida dies at 93

Professor, writer, lawyer, political scientist and member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) Candido Mendes de Almeida died this afternoon (17), at the age of 93, in Rio de Janeiro. The cause of death was pulmonary embolism.

Occupying chair number 35 of the ABL, Candido Mendes had an extensive academic background. Rector of Universidade Candido Mendes, the writer participated in several international educational initiatives with institutes in other countries. Among the works published by Mendes, the following stand out: Nationalism and Development (1963), The Country of Patience (2000), Subculture and change: why I am ashamed of my country (2010) and the armed reason (2012).

In a death note, Candido Mendes University declared official mourning for 15 days. “Grieving the irreparable loss to Universidade Candido Mendes, we will continue to honor the memory and legacy of Prof. Candido in the permanent struggle for the democratization of access to education in the country and the development of excellent teaching, which will forever mark the history of transformation of Brazilian society through education”, said the entity in a note on social networks.

Candido Mendes was the husband of pulmonologist and researcher Margareth Dalcolmo, recently appointed to the World Health Organization’s commission of experts and experts. In addition to his wife, Mendes leaves four children and five grandchildren.
