The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, assured, this Wednesday, September 25, that will study the proposal approved by the Colombian Senate in which it urges the president to “publicly recognize” Edmundo González Urrutia as the winner of the presidential elections in Venezuelaheld on July 28.
“So as not to confuse public opinion, the Colombian Congress, by constitutional order, cannot demand that the president take positions on international policy.“, wrote the president on his X account.

Faced with this, Petro said: “The proposal is a request and I will study it within the decisions that I have to make, always consulting, first of all, the general interest of Colombian society.”.
The document, approved with 48 votes, urges Petro to “publicly recognize the true winners of this electoral process, who do not correspond to the current regime of Nicolás Maduro“.
“The Senate reiterates that the recognition of the legitimate results is not only a sign of support for democracy in the region, but also an action consistent with the principles of Colombia’s foreign policy, committed to the defense of human rights and the rule of law.“, the congressmen stated.

Last week, the Colombian House of Representatives also approved a proposal asking Petro to recognize González Urrutia’s victory.
The Colombian president and his Mexican and Brazilian counterparts, Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, respectively, have tried to mediate in the crisis that Venezuela has been experiencing since the country’s electoral body announced Maduro’s questionable victory in the elections on July 28.

None of these countries have yet recognized Maduro’s victory, but neither have they opted for González, the opposition candidate, and They are committed to requesting that the electoral records be published and to opening avenues for dialogue between the two parties.
