World leaders react to Trump's victory in the United States

Upon declaring victory in the North American presidential elections, despite the vote count not being officially completed, President-elect Donald Trump begins to receive messages from world leaders.World leaders react to Trump's victory in the United States

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Órban was one of the first to react. “On the way to a wonderful victory”, wrote Órban in a Facebook post, when the votes were still being counted.

Later, when Trump’s election was practically assured, the Hungarian Prime Minister again mentioned the North American elections, stating that this “is the greatest comeback in US political history”.

“Congratulations to President Trump on his huge victory. A much-needed victory for the world,” said Órban in a message published on the social network X.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke, hailing “the greatest return in history”. On the social network X, Netanyahu stated that Trump’s return to the White House “offers a new beginning to America and a powerful commitment to the great alliance between Israel and America”.

The far-right ministers of the Israeli government also celebrated Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz congratulated Trump and said that together they will “strengthen the US-Israel alliance, bring back the hostages and stand firm to defeat the Iranian-led axis of evil.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wrote on Twitter: “Yes! God bless Trump.” Finance Minister Bezalel Smitrich said: “God bless Israel, God bless America.”

Hamas, for its part, said that Trump will be tested and that the US’ “blind support” for Israel “must end”.

“This blind support for the Zionist entity must end, because it comes at the expense of the future of our people, as well as the security and stability of the region,” Bassem Naïm, a member of the Hamas political cabinet, told AFP.

“We ask that Trump learn from Joe Biden’s mistakes,” another Hamas source told Reuters.

The Iranian government, in turn, declared itself indifferent to Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections and considers that relations between the two countries will not change.

Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani stated that “the election of the president of the United States has no clear connection with Iran. The general policies of the United States and Iran are fixed.”

“Considering the history of sanctions over the past four decades, Iran has faced them and is not worried about Trump’s re-election as there was no difference with the other person [o atual presidente, Joe Biden]”, he said, adding that “sanctions have strengthened Iran’s internal power, which has the ability to deal with new sanctions.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also congratulated Trump on his “remarkable electoral victory.”

“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach to global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace to Ukraine,” he said on the X social network.

“We look forward to an era of a strong America under President Trump’s decisive leadership. We count on strong and continued bipartisan support for Ukraine in the US,” he added.

On the Russian side, the Kremlin stated that Vladimir Putin has no intention of congratulating Trump. “I don’t know anything about a plan by the (Russian) president to congratulate Trump on the election. Let’s not forget that we are talking about a hostile country that is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state,” said the Kremlin spokesman , Dmitri Peskov, in reference to the conflict in Ukraine.

“It is practically impossible for relations to deteriorate further. They are at an all-time low. As for what might happen, everything will depend on American leadership,” Peskov said, adding that the Kremlin will evaluate Trump “based on concrete actions”.

“We will see what happens in January,” he said, referring to the date of the president-elect’s inauguration.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also congratulated his “friend” Donald Trump. “I hope that Turkey-US relations will strengthen, that regional and global crises and wars, especially the Palestinian issue and the Russia-Ukraine war, will come to an end; I believe that more efforts will be made for a more just world,” Erdogan wrote on X.

China said it will continue to work with the United States based on “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning. “Our policy towards the USA is consistent”, he stressed.

Reactions in Europe

On the European side, one of the first reactions came from France. President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Donald Trump and said he was ready to work with the Republican. “We are ready to work together, as we have for the past four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity”, wrote Macron in X.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also congratulated Trump on his “historic victory”. “I look forward to working with you in the coming years. As our closest allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defending our shared values of freedom, democracy and entrepreneurship,” Starmer said on X.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed Trump, stressing that “Italy and the USA are “sister” nations, linked by unshakable alliance, common values and historic friendship.” “It’s a strategic bond, which I’m sure we will now strengthen even further,” said Meloni, in a message shared on X.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also congratulated Trump on the social network X. “Germany and the USA have worked together successfully for a long time to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to do so for the benefit of our citizens.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez congratulated Trump, stating that the two will “work on strategic bilateral relations and a strong transatlantic partnership”.

The secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said he had already conveyed his congratulations to Donald Trump. “Your leadership will again be essential to keeping our alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to promote peace through strength through NATO,” Mark Rutte said on social media site X.

His predecessor, Jens Stoltenberg, also congratulated the president-elect, recalling that in his first term, the working relationship between the two “was focused on strengthening transatlantic security and adapting NATO for the future”.

“In a world of growing instability, strong US leadership remains essential,” he stressed.

The president of the European Commission congratulated Donald Trump on his election as the 47th president of the United States of America. “I look forward to working with the president again to advance a strong transatlantic agenda,” said Ursula von der Leyen. “We will work together in a transatlantic partnership. Millions of jobs and billions in trade and investment on each side of the Atlantic depend on the dynamism and stability of our economic relationship.”
