Iván Prieto, receiver of bullpen of the Cuban team that participated in the V World Baseball Classic, did not return to the island with his teammates this Monday morning, according to reports from various sources.
The 28-year-old mask from Holguin was not included in the official Cuban roster, but he was part of the delegation as a backup catcher to warm up the pitchers, as the organizers of the Classic created in this edition of the contest.
Prieto did not board the plane that transported the Caribbean squad from Miami to Havana on Monday, making him the first player included in a delegation to the World Baseball Classic who did not return to Cuba.
In the four previous editions, no other baseball player on the island had made the decision not to return, despite the fact that they competed in Puerto Rico, the United States and Mexico, places where a good part of the dropouts of athletes linked to the movement are recorded. Cuban sports.
Cuba ended the World Classic in fourth place, after losing 14-2 to the United States in the semifinals of the event. Despite the final defeat, the Antillean team registered its second best historical result in the fight, after the silver medal won in 2006.
