The harassment that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo suffered by a man last Tuesday, on a public street in the Historic Center of the capital, was condemned on a national and international scale.

The United Nations (UN) yesterday expressed its support for the president through a message broadcast on X by its representation in Mexico, in which it reaffirmed “the importance of preventing and condemning all forms of violence against women, as well as guaranteeing their rights.”

International organizations and institutions of the three powers of the Union joined in the shows of support, with the exception of the PAN in Congress. Moni Pizani Orsini, representative of UN Women in the country, warned on networks that “violence against the female sector cannot be normalized or minimized,” while Ana Güezmes García, director of Gender Affairs at ECLAC, expressed her solidarity with the President during the 26th International Meeting on Gender Statistics in Mexico City.

The head of the Ministry of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, condemned the incident and stressed that no one should live in fear.

“As a woman and Secretary of the Interior, I express my indignation at the sexual harassment of which our President was a victim. @Claudiashein. It is a reprehensible fact. We say it clearly: no woman who walks through public spaces should live in fear; “We all have the right to walk free and safe,” she published on social networks.

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation expressed its “most energetic rejection of all forms of violence” against women, girls and adolescents, and affirmed that its eradication is the duty of the State. In a statement, he reiterated that non-consensual physical contact constitutes a form of violence that violates the dignity and rights of people.

Citlalli Hernández, head of the Women’s Secretariat, told The Day that seeks to standardize the criminal type of sexual harassment and abuse, and announced a campaign to remind men that touching a woman without her consent is a crime, and that they should report it, as the president did.

In the Senate, the political forces, with the exception of the PAN, expressed their solidarity and support for the head of the Executive. Laura Itzel Castillo, president of that Upper House, pointed out the condemnation in a press conference with legislators from Morena, PT, PVEM, PRI and MC, who carried signs with the messages: “If one is touched, we will all respond” and “Women’s bodies are respected.”

Also in San Lázaro, Morena deputies joined in: “enough of normalizing the harassment and digital violence that our President experiences,” the head of the Gender Equality Commission, Anaís Burgos, said in a conference.

Party leaders spoke out: Morena expressed her “deep indignation and repudiation” for the harassment against President Sheinbaum, while the PRI leader, Alejandro Moreno, described it as “regrettable,” although he hinted that “it may be a setup” to divert attention from the murder of the mayor of Uruapan.

The British newspaper Guardian also reported the event and highlighted criticism of the lack of presidential security and the high level of sexual harassment in the country.
