After the supervision visit of the Mayan Train works last weekend by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Governor Mara Lezama announced that the federal government will invest in the construction of a 21 kilometer (km) road. that will connect Bacalar with the Mayan vestiges of Ichkabal.
The president informed that in total the federal government will invest 1,000 million pesos in the improvement of at least 10 archaeological zones of Quintana Roo, and the road to Ichkabal will be part of that investment.
“We met with the president to review the progress of the Mayan Train and he shared great news with us. A 21 km road will be developed to get from Bacalar to Ichkabal, an impressive archaeological zone that we will soon show the world, ”he said through a message on social networks.
Mara Lezama explained that the opening of Ichkabal will allow rural tourism to detonate and promote new jobs and economic growth, with a new model that puts the poor first.
The governor had already presented the Ichkabal project to López Obrador, who gave his support, and even with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) they are working on the rescue of that and other archaeological zones.
In a previous announcement, he acknowledged that due to the archaeological prospecting work, the opening has had to be postponed until dates yet to be defined, in addition, they have always maintained dialogue with ejidatarios of Bacalar and INAH authorities.
In December 2022, the president stressed that an agreement must first be reached with the ejidatarios in order to move forward with the opening of the archaeological zone, since it is a public commitment from his government.
