This morning (7), two men stole eight engravings by Henri Matisse and five by Cândido Portinari from an exhibition at the Mário de Andrade Library.
The crime was confirmed by the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, which reported the attack on the exhibition “From book to museum: MAM São Paulo and the Mário de Andrade Library”, held in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art (MAM).
The site, which is subject to inspection by the Civil Police, has a surveillance team and a security camera system.
The secretariat informed that all material that could be used in the investigation is being provided to the police authorities, and that the works on display have a current insurance policy.
In a statement, the Civil Police confirmed that they are taking steps to identify and arrest the two men. According to the police, the duo captured a security guard and an elderly couple who were visiting the place. They placed the documents and paintings in a canvas bag and fled through the main exit. The security guards ran to ask for help from military police patrolling the region, but the suspects were not located.
