The national government advances with works in Tucumán and Salta with axis in the passenger and cargo trains that cover the recovery of roads and branches, the improvement of infrastructure and the construction of logistics nodes to reactivate regional economies, as well as offer greater connectivity and strengthen the transfer of national production, the Ministry of Transportation of the Nation reported on Tuesday.

The works are part of the Rail Transport Modernization Plan led by Minister Diego Giuliano, and are in charge of Trenes Argentinos Operaciones e Infraestructura, in charge of Martín Marinucci.

Giuliano pointed out that “it is essential to move forward with the growth of our rail network, both for cargo and passengers. It often happens that moving production from the Argentine North to the port is more expensive than taking it from the port to Europe.”

“With our trains and logistics nodes we can significantly reduce costs, making each mode of transport provide the maximum potential at its scale: the truck for 400 kilometers and the train for long distances,” he added.

“We also want people to have a cheaper, safer and more efficient means of transportation to travel around the country, as more than 26 million people are already doing every month on the entire rail system throughout Argentina. That is why we have reconnected more than 50 towns and we want Tucumán to be one more of the capitals that has the train again,” Giuliano said.

The renewed branches

In this sense and to reactivate freight trainsthe Ministry of Transport is renovating the Belgrano Cargas line with the comprehensive improvement of the track infrastructure on branches C12, C15 and C18 in Nuestra Señora de Talavera, Joaquín V. Gonzalez, Apolinario Saravia, Pichanal and Chaguaral, in the town of Orán, in the province of Salta, in addition to the work being carried out on the C8 branch, between Gobernador Garmendia and Rosario de la Frontera, in the same province.

At the same time, The national government is building the multimodal logistics node and dry port in the town of Güemes that will make it possible to provide the multimodal cargo transportation network with greater efficiency, reducing logistics costs and travel times, and making regional economies more competitive both for their commercialization throughout the country and for their exports.

In this point, in the province of Tucuman this month began the work that will execute the construction of a bitrocha railway maneuvering yard for the entrance of the General Belgrano railway (narrow gauge), and the Miter railway (wide gauge), and that will articulate the railway with the routes and with the Teniente airport Benjamín Matienzo favoring multimodality, bringing direct benefits to local and regional producers.

Besides, the recovery of passenger trains is vital for the Ministry of Transport and, for this reason, the bridge over the Salí River is being rehabilitated for long-distance passenger trains to return to the Tucumán station, in the center of the provincial capital. Since 2019, the service has been limited to Cevil Pozo, on the outskirts of San Miguel de Tucumán, due to a flood in the river that affected the stability of the bridge.

Also, The service that connects Campo Quijano with Güemes in Salta is being improved, and renovating the stations Salta, Betania, Güemes, Batalla de Salta, Campo Santo, Alvarado (which will be added as a new intermediate stop), Cerrillos and Rosario de Lerma of the regional passenger service. The works consist of the improvement of the accesses, the adequacy of accessibility, enclosures, the installation of furniture and solar luminaires in sectors of public use such as surroundings and platforms.

With these works carried out both in Tucumán and Salta, the Ministry of Transportation of the Nation aims to generate new jobs, recovering passenger and freight trains to provide greater connectivity and an important boost to regional economies.
