Workers of the CVG holding paralyze production areas in demand for installment payments

Workers of the Siderúrgica del Orinoco (Sidor), Ferrominera Orinoco, Bauxilum and Venalum denounced having received only a fraction of the payment corresponding to their salaries. On January 30, workers of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana (CVG) declared themselves sit-down. The workers paralyzed the productive areas of the companies because only 50% of the payment corresponding to the second half of January was canceled.

In the afternoon of this Monday, workers of the Siderúrgica del Orinoco (Sidor), Ferrominera Orinoco, Bauxilum and Venalum denounced having received only a fraction of the payment corresponding to their salaries, in response, they declared a strike causing the paralysis of the process productive of the companies.

Sidoristas reported that the Billets, Bars and Wire Rod and Slabs Steelworks are paralyzed to demand salary conditions.

The personnel of Ferrominera Orinoco asserted the stoppage of the areas of Railroad and Procesadora del Mineral del Hierro (Pmh).

“In Ferrominera they deposited some fortnights of Pyrrhic. The one who charges 500 bolivars, yesterday charged 200 bolivars. Those who get 900 or 1,000 bolivars, got 500. That’s why the Pmh and Railroad workers since yesterday at 6:00 pm have been sitting down,” said the worker César Marcano, who has worked for Ferrominera for 15 years. Orinoco.

Juval Idrogo, who works as a welder in Sidor, stated that “we do not work in parts, but rather we work in full, you cannot pay for parts. The company acts like it doesn’t care and our family depends on our salary to eat”.

In the afternoon, Sidor and Ferrominera Orinoco issued identical statements explaining the situation to the personnel, both state-owned stated that “the payroll corresponding to the second half of January was partially deposited.”

In this sense, there was no explanation or justification for the delay, but some employees attributed the situation to a decision by the National Budget Office (Onapre) and the lack of liquidity.

In the official versions, they promised to pay the remaining amount in the following 24 hours, which they fulfilled in the afternoon of Tuesday, January 31.

However, despite the fact that most of the workers received the remaining money, they criticized the non-compliance and stressed that it is not an acceptable situation, taking into account the multiple salary claims that they have made before the CVG authorities.

Workers demand dialogue with competent authorities

Given the situation that they described as “outrageous”, this January 31st employees of holding companies went to CVG’s headquarters, located in Alta Vista, to protest the wage breach.

The protesters spoke with the security manager of the site, in order to be received by the president of CVG, Pedro Maldonado, although the answer was that he was not in the place. In view of this, they delivered a signed list with the names of all those present and the company to which they belong in order to coordinate a meeting with Maldonado.

Until the time of processing this information, the productive areas remained paralyzed.
