A group of employees grouped in the Union of Workers of the Electrical and Similar Industries of the Republic of Panama (SITIESPA) denounced mismanagement of resources by the current leadership of this organization.
Specifically, they pointed to the general secretary of this union, Jorge Alegría. Sitiespa’s communication secretary, Alejandro Pérez, pointed out at a press conference that the internal problems have been going on since July 2021, when they were convened as a National Executive Committee (CEN) and there came to light the mismanagement of the union’s resources by Happiness. He assured that these monies were used for personal expenses.
He said that it was possible to verify that the diversion of funds occurred through two checks issued by the Ministry of Finance for health expenses and that one of these checks was made out to a close relative of the union’s general secretary (Alegría), a person who was outside this trade union organization.
He emphasized that legal actions have already been taken to clarify these facts and other acts that did not comply with due process before the Ministry of Labor, reiterating that they also presented documentation of some appointments made by the secretary in the CEN without being endorsed.
He explained that the entire situation denounced brought about a division of the group “and the empowerment of Mr. Alegría, in the company of the finance secretary, Luis Domínguez. Most of us who are here were displaced from our commissions within the union,” he specified.
