In the National Assembly of Workers in Struggle that was held this Saturday, March 18 in Caracas, it was agreed to create a common platform among all labor organizations in the country. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Association of Professors of the Central University of Venezuela (apucv), where they discussed fStrengthen unity, organization and agree on a plan of Action for a dignified life.

Among the points that were discussed in the assembly in which 150 representatives of different unions participated, the creation of a Provisional Committee for the Promotion of Regional Assemblies, the constitution of a National Conflict Command, hold a National Congress of Workers in Struggle and prepare a National List of Demands.

The president of the Apucv, José Gregorio Afonso, raised the need to “raise a proposal, an organization and an activism that makes it possible for this country to recover for the great majority of us who are obviously the workers.”

The president of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (FVM) and the General Secretary of the union, Carmen Teresa Márquez and Leyla Escobar, respectively, were also present at the meeting. As well as the union leader Ruben González.

“The workers must seek that unity and collective consciousness where we really strengthen ourselves to go in search of respect for our rights. We have an article 91 (of the National Constitution) that establishes that workers must have a decent, sufficient and vital salary to support our families, because we want that to be fulfilled,” said González.

The union leader stressed that the Constitution also establishes in its article 89 that the benefits of workers are intangible, progressive and inalienable and added that the international agreement of the International Organization of Workers (ILO) speaks of union freedom and autonomy , which have been violated in Venezuela.

«We have a system that runs over, persecutes and blackmails workers. My call is to all the workers of the different states of the country that we must hold large assemblies to seek that great unity and that we channel all this great protest and mobilization,” said González.

The union leader’s statements are in line with what was announced by the workers’ union in a statement released together with the call for the assembly this Saturday, in which they pointed out that “what began with specific demands for pensions and salaries, Today it stands as a great conflictive list of all the workers of the country”, referring to the deterioration of wages due to the high and persistent inflation and devaluation, as well as the instructions of Onapre (National Budget Office).

“It is about defeating the current policies that condemn working people to a miserable survival,” the statement said.
