In Mexico there is a growing interest in cryptocurrencies, around 12 million people in the country own some of these assets, however, the representation of men in the ecosystem is greater than women who make use of this technology, according to Finder’s Cryptocurrency Adoption Index.
Of the people who own cryptocurrencies in Mexico, 59% are men and 41% are women, which implies a difference of 18 percentage points, according to the index.
For this reason, within the framework of The Belle Block event organized by Mastercard, the participants agreed that the women involved in the cryptocurrency ecosystem seek to promote greater use and representation through actions such as education and the creation of alliances with various entities.
“At the time of building in this sector it is important to understand that as a woman you not only have to seek alliances and partners only with other women, because the reality is that we need allies, people who can also offer us those tools that already exist, the issue is that these allies also take it with the same seriousness that we do”, commented Paulina Corral, co-founder of Metagals.
In this sense, Bárbara González, general director of Bitso México, indicated that in the cryptocurrency sector there is a lower female representation that is reflected in popular terms used by digital currency enthusiasts such as “crypto-bros”, which refers to to male speculators.
“Representation is getting smaller and smaller and that begins to create entry barriers for women. Communities and spaces help to eliminate these barriers, to simplify concepts, open the doors to many people who may be very curious, to all the brilliant minds of women who are out there, wanting to learn and be part of this ecosystem,” González commented. .
The cryptocurrency holding gap is further accentuated when global figures are taken, where the adoption gap is 28 percentage points in favor of men with 64% of holding compared to 36% of women.
In this context, Mónica Talán, founder of CryptoConexión, indicated that one of the priority efforts to reduce the gender gap in the digital asset sector is education, since it is usually one of the main barriers to the inclusion and participation of women. women. She pointed out that it is necessary to have the resources to learn about economics and blockchain.
“We are opening the gap to generate representation in forums, communities, also with regulators and partners. This change in gender representation is beginning, and I hope that very soon we will be able to have that variety that we so desire,” González commented.

In addition to what was stated by the directives during the forum, Silvina Moschini, president and founder of Unicoin, in an interview with El Economista, indicated that cryptocurrencies become more relevant in the daily lives of women from aspects such as investment, in which they also coincides with education as an important factor, he explained that this is reflected in entrepreneurship and in projects led by women.
“From the point of view of entrepreneurship, there are not many women who are leading ventures related to technology or cryptocurrencies, I think that we also have a good area of opportunity there to be able to add more women to the financial industry,” Moschini commented.
He added that from the teams of the firms in the cryptocurrency sector it is important to add female participation from different areas of experience, so that inclusion is reflected in the actions of the firms.
“Women do not have to have male leadership attributes to be a good leader, the attributes of female leaders have to do with empathy, they have a very, very important role in our design as human beings. From cryptocurrencies we want to promote those values such as financial, mental and emotional health, that is what the community is going to bring and we will also do it with alliances with other entrepreneurs”, Moschini pointed out.
