Woman and children disappear after being dragged by river in Matagalpa

A woman and her three children, two teenagers and a child, disappeared when they tried to cross a river in northern Nicaragua, the Municipal Committee for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Attention (Comupred) of the municipality of El Tuma-La Dalia reported this Friday.

The woman and the minors were swept away by the current of the Karate River on Thursday night while they were traveling along a rural road in the Valle Isla community, in El Tuma-La Dalia, about 173 kilometers north of Managua, according to Comupred.

The flow of the river had grown and its current intensified as a result of the rains in the area, which corresponds to the department (Province) of Matagalpa, in the north of the country, according to official information.

The disappeared persons were identified as María Leonor Quintero, 36, and her children Migdalia (14), Esmeralda (12) and Alex (3), all with the surname Quintero.

The Comupred rescue brigades continued to search for the victims in the hours before noon this Friday in the river basin.

In the same area, a motorcyclist was rescued after being dragged with his vehicle while trying to cross a river and a landslide damaged “several houses,” local authorities said.

Deaths of people crossing suddenly swollen rivers are common during the rainy season in Nicaragua.

The rainy season in Nicaragua begins every May 15 and ends on November 20, including the hurricane season.
