Without medical attention, the state of health of Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca worsens in prison

Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca

Havana Cuba. – The political activist Eralidis Frómeta Polanco denounced this Thursday that the Cuban regime refuses to provide medical assistance to her husband, the independent journalist and political prisoner Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca, whose state of health continues to deteriorate in the Combinado del Este prison. .

According to Frómeta, her 60-year-old husband has kidney failure, uncontrolled blood pressure, lung problems, loss of teeth, skin lesions and constant swelling in his feet. During the last month, he says, he has had seven pimples on the back of his head.

“He says they look like tumors [los granos en la cabeza] and that they hurt him a lot, so much so that the re-educator was going to send him immediately to the prison hospital, ”explains Frómeta from a telephone conversation with Valle Roca that occurred on November 1.

However, without the consent of State Security, the prison authorities cannot make any move with the political prisoner, assures his wife. Consequently, on the 3rd Valle Roca made a new call in which he informed Frómeta that he was still waiting to be transferred to the hospital.

“There, it is worthless what the re-educator or the head of the prison says; Nothing is done if State Security or, in most cases, Raúl Castro or Díaz-Canel does not order it first. You can die, as has already happened with prisoners of 11 J”, the woman limited.

In the prison there are hardly any doctors, Frómeta expands, but on November 3 he was checked out “in a very bad way” by a doctor who “came to pick up the crate of chicken that they give to the local soldiers. She didn’t do any studies on him, she sent him ciprofloxacin and that’s it, an antibiotic that is unlikely to appear there. She didn’t even order anything for the pain.”

The independent journalist also took advantage of the last call to his wife to send a message of thanks to Óscar Arias, former president of Costa Rica and 1987 Nobel Peace Prize winner, who recently sponsored him to give international visibility to your case.

“My thanks. It is an honor that you have sponsored me. I really feel very moved and very flattered to be the godson of such an eminent and correct personality, ”said Valle Roca, who asked to spread his words of gratitude.

Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca was arrested on June 15, 2021 and sentenced to five years in prison for the alleged crimes of “ongoing enemy propaganda and resistance.” His health problems began when he was detained in Villa Marista, as a result of a hunger strike that he carried out for 17 days to demand his release.

Instead, he diagnosed lung enhancement that persists today, according to his wife.

“It has been progressive, one thing after another until he fell into a state of health that is not compatible with the prison regime he is in, and to top it all off, he does not receive care from a specialist who can decipher the origin of these diseases,” Frómeta lamented.

The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) included the situation of the Cuban prisoner in a document approved on October 30, within the framework of the 78th General Assembly of that body.
