In its session on Monday the 12th, the Municipality of Nueva Palmira, with the assistance of Mayor Agustín Callero, and councilors Raúl Gaona, Leda ´Charo´ Bentancour, and Antonio ´Topo´ Cosati, resolved to pedestrianize 25 de Mayo, but not the boulevard. The arguments.
Since the weekend, 25 de Mayo street between Oribe and Lavalleja, became pedestrian from 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.
This pilot experience arises after knowing the report of the Department of Traffic of the Municipality of Colonia, which gave favorable approval to leave the promenade pedestrianized, between Gral. Artigas and Oribe, and Lavalleja from May 25 to the promenade, the weekends of week. Request made by councilor Cosati last April, so that children and older adults have a safer space for their recreation.
This report brought controversies among the members of the Municipality, because it is understood that Tránsito accepts the proposal because there are similar precedents, although it does not provide inspectors during the closure of the boulevard, which “leaves us helpless to regulations in the event of an accident”. the mayor said. “The experiences with Tránsito are not good,” he added.
It was resolved to request Tránsito that, in addition to supporting the initiative, it commits in writing to assign at least one inspector during the hours in which the boulevard remains closed for pedestrians, that the proposal was on Sundays between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. depending on the time of year.
While waiting for the response from Transit, it was decided to leave 25 de Mayo Street between Oribe and Lavalleja as pedestrian, considering that it is more feasible to control and that it would not create traffic difficulties. It will remain pedestrianized from 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.
Cosati, although he accepted the proposal of May 25, maintains that “it is time for us to decide to do things”, referring to the fact that the Municipality has the power to decide, with the endorsement of Transit, to transform the boulevard into a pedestrian street.
