Without giving a single name, the Cuban regime assures that there were 18 convictions for femicides in 2022

(EFE).- In 2022 there were a total of 18 convictions on the island for sexist murders, all with penalties of more than 25 years in prison, the Supreme People’s Court of Cuba (TSP) said on Monday.

The high court pointed out, in a statement made public this Monday and after an intense campaign by independent feminists who focused on the issue, that “the majority age range of the victims ranges between 20 and 44.”

The figure released by the Supreme Court represents half of the femicides registered last year – which also includes vicarious violence – by the independent platforms Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo.

Both organizations were in charge of keeping a record on cases of sexist violence in the absence of official data.

In the statement, the TSP clarified that it only took into account the “crimes known by the courts in which the intentional death of women occurred” and that “it was found that (…) there was gender-based violence.”

The Supreme Court did not emphasize whether all the sentences correspond to crimes that occurred in 2022

The Supreme Court did not clarify whether there are other cases pending judgment. Nor did he stress whether all the convictions correspond to crimes that occurred in 2022.

This announcement is published five days after the high court confirmed the life sentence against two men previously sentenced for sexist violence.

These are the first sanctions against feminicides -who were sanctioned for the crime of murder, given that the crime of gender violence is not criminalized on the Island- made public in 2023.

Strained Wings and I Do Believe You accused the high court of “punitive populism”.

The observatories of these groups, which have telephone service numbers, have confirmed 27 murders for gender reasons in Cuba so far in 2023.

The activists have permanently advocated for the approval of a comprehensive law on gender violence.

The Supreme Court argued that, in the Criminal Code, which entered into force at the end of 2022, “more rigorous sanctions against all acts of gender violence” were implemented. And that “in cases in which the death of a woman is caused for these reasons, the sanctions provided range from 20 to 30 years of temporary deprivation of liberty, perpetual deprivation or death.”
