Without containment or dissimulation

Without containment or dissimulation

How is it that a coalition with a majority in both Chambers, which controls most of the governorships and is the one with the most legislators in the state congresses, with a president who won by an absolute majority and has never failed to have majority approval, and that also has among its ranks the two presidential candidates with the greatest voting intentions, does it need to demonstrate such a capacity for mobilization? Who do you need to prove it to? So that?

Who had the biggest march? AMLO in the Zócalo vs ‘INE is not touched’

The march on November 13 tried to defend the electoral authority against the reform project that seeks to abolish it. The act of the 27th was not to advocate for this or any other project but to acclaim the president. The first proposed providing support to a democratic institution under threat; the second, to pay homage to the political leader who called it. The contrast could not be more illustrative: some marched to warn of the risk of an autocratic regression; others responded to the call of the president in turn to close ranks around him.

Yesterday, when I was part of the opposition, the lopezobradoristas denounced the diversion of public resources for political-partisan purposes, the use of the government apparatus and social programs for proselytizing purposes, the purchase or coercion of the vote, the conditioning of rights or services in exchange for supporting a campaign or attending a rally, etc. But today, that they are already the government, the Lopezobradoristas not only resort to those same practices, but also do so without restraint or dissimulation, openly claiming them, regardless of their own history and that they are prohibited by law. Why? Because they want to and because they can. It’s not an oversight, it’s a boast.

The problem is not who came. Calling the one of the 13th “citizen’s march” and the one of the 27th “march of those carried” is to contribute to polarization, to disregard the complexity of both massive phenomena and to reduce the plurality of citizens who attended one or the other event to two absurd blocks. monolithic. The problem is, rather, in the role assumed by the authorities. Because in the first case, provocations, insults and disapproval abounded; but for the second there was a lot of work, promotion and support. Perhaps we are already spoiled, but it should be remembered that it is not up to the authorities to fight or promote demonstrations. Let them do it as if anything is a public aberration.
