This Monday (22), the guest of the program No Censorship is the medical director of the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Luiz Fernando Córdova. He talks with presenter Marina Machado about the benefits, care and risks of bariatric and metabolic surgical procedures available in Brazil. The program airs at 9 pm on TV Brazil.
Known generically as obesity surgery or stomach reduction, these are techniques for the treatment of morbid or severe obesity and associated diseases and aggravated by excess body fat. According to a study published by Journal of the American Medical Association (never), the procedure reduced by 90% the risk of obese patients developing severe liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer, or related death.
Born in 1970, in Curitiba, Paraná, Luiz Fernando Córdova graduated in medicine from Faculdade Evangélica do Paraná, in 1994. The following year, he spent first in general surgery residency and then in digestive system surgery, working at the Evangelical Hospital from Curitiba. In 1999, he moved to the Federal District, when he was invited to take over the General Surgery service at Hospital Brasília. In 2019, he was elected president of the Federal District Chapter of the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (SBCBM) and, in 2021, he assumed the position of medical director of the institution.
Córdova is one of the contributors to the recommendation that led the Ministry of Health to classify, in 2020, bariatric and metabolic surgery as one of the essential and priority procedures for public and supplementary health, as access to treatment was affected by the covid-19 pandemic. 19, harming the quality of life of people awaiting the procedure through the Unified Health System (SUS).
