Elisbel Lamorú Monjes and Georvenia Castellanos Ramírez are the most recent victims of male violence in Cuba of which there is a record. The platform Yo Sí te Creo en Cuba (YSTC) confirmed both murders, bringing the number of femicide cases on the island to 26 so far in 2023.
Lamorú Monje, a resident of Nueva Paz, in the province of Mayabeque, died at the hands of his partner “between the night of April 15 and the early morning of April 16,” the platform details. She is survived by “two daughters and one son, all minors,” accurate YSTC notewhich verified the information jointly with the Alas Tensas observatory.
In the same publication, the organization also reported the femicide of Georvenia Castellanos Ramírez, on March 14, in the city of Santiago de Cuba, “due to complications derived from the extreme beating given by her partner.”
The list of women murdered in the first four months of the year triples the number registered on the same date in 2022, when nine were reported. Only in the first two weeks of April, there are seven violent deaths.
Before both murders were confirmed, the most recent victim had been Ana Ivis Llanes, 42 years old. His death, which occurred last week in the El Rastro neighborhood, in Artemisa, was attributed to his ex-partner, according to several family members.

Before her, she was murdered Aliuska Gardens, 35 years old and from Guantánamo, who was killed by her partner in the Jesús María neighborhood, in Havana. According to feminist groups, her death is linked to a case of sex trafficking and internal migration.
Independent organizations have long called for specific legislation to protect women. In Cuba there is also no official data on these crimes, a gap pointed out by numerous feminist groups.
While the cases of femicides continue to increase, the president Miguel Díaz-Canel recognized the existence of sexist violence on the island and assured that there will be “zero tolerance”. In a meeting with 480 representatives from various provinces, held last Friday, the president promised a national debate, as well as “improving the statistics because they are insufficient” or could be “biased.”
“There are many manifestations of violence in our society that are not recognized, which is why we must do more in this regard,” he insisted.
