The double femicide of Caridad Medina and her mother, Adaris, this Wednesday, April 5, in the rural neighborhood El Pesquero, of the Cristino Naranjo Popular Council, in the Holguin municipality of Cacocum, has been reported this Thursday by the platform Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba through their accounts on social networks.
The alleged murderer was a former partner of Medina and committed suicide after taking the lives of both women. “This information has been verified by the joint effort of the observatories of the Cuban Women’s Network, Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba,” the information added.
With the murder of a mother and daughter, there have been 22 women victims of femicide in Cuba so far this year, more than double the number in the same period in 2022. The previous complaint detailed that Rosa Amelia Sotolongo, 22, had been murdered on Sunday passed by his partner, in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos province.
Most of the femicides registered on the Island are carried out by partners and ex-partners of the victims
Two weeks apart, the previous victim had been Darisleni Fuentes Infante, murdered by her ex-partner on March 19 in the Popular Fisheries Council, belonging to the municipality of Baraguá, in Ciego de Ávila. Ten days earlier, Elaidy Alonso Arbolaez, 27, was also killed by a man who “harassed her” in the community of Condado, in the municipality of Trinidad, in the province of Sancti Spíritus.
Most of the femicides registered on the Island are carried out by partners and ex-partners of the victims. To date, February is the most violent month with 13 murders, plus three in January and three in March. The most affected provinces have been Guantánamo, Villa Clara, Matanzas, Camagüey, Havana, as well as Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Pinar del Río, Sancti Spíritus and Ciego de Ávila.
