For years, López Obrador has been in a confrontation with the INE. And as president he has redoubled those attacks against the electoral body and even proposed that it be part of the Judicial Power, in order to have a true “autonomous, independent Power, with upright, honest, irreproachable people, but not what we are suffering now.” .
In response, the president of the INE, Lorenzo Córdova, has stated that a reform must contemplate improvements to the electoral system, but if it implies losing what has been advanced, it is not “worth it.”
“Is an electoral reform convenient? If it is to improve our system, if it implies broad consensus that includes all political forces, if it is a reform, well, to improve democracy, go ahead; if not, it is not worth it,” he assured. .
Lorenzo Córdova: “The government challenges the democratic order, not the INE”
It is the INE that President López Obrador has accused of allowing “the fraud of 2006”, which he points to as a boycott and describes as anti-democratic for not promoting and hindering the mandate revocation consultation. It is the INE that he accuses of being the most expensive and of not guaranteeing clean elections, which he criticized as an attack on democracy for withdrawing the candidacies for governor of Michoacán and Guerrero from Raúl Morón and Felix Salgado. It is the INE that he points to as biased.
“The institutional design of how the councilors arrive puts them in a negotiating situation with the political parties and to that extent, it is difficult to ask them to be neutral, so that generates a confrontation,” explains Rosiles.
Weakening the electoral body, experts consider, is a red flag for democracy in Mexico, since it is thanks to the IFE and now the INE that “quality elections” have been achieved.
Another of the proposals that the electoral reform initiative would include is the reduction or elimination of proportional representation legislators, known as plurinominals.
“It is to reduce, nothing more than we are still in the analysis if there are only more elected legislators left, that is being seen. But that there will be a decrease, without a doubt, “added López Obrador.
