The government of the state of São Paulo issued an alert for the population to save water. The measure was taken because the high temperatures of recent days caused an increase of up to 60% in water consumption in the state, which has put pressure on the distribution system, causing interruption of supply in some neighborhoods.
The request is for “water-conscious” use, faster bathing and avoiding waste and use for non-essential purposes, such as filling swimming pools or washing sidewalks and cars. “The use of water must be prioritized for food and personal hygiene. The collaboration of the population is essential to guarantee regular supply”, says the alert.
On Sabesp’s social networks there are several complaints about water scarcity. Sabesp’s profile on X, for example, has notifications from users stating that they do not receive water in their homes. According to reports, there are problems in all areas of the capital of São Paulo and even in other regions of the state, such as Vale do Paraíba.
Sabesp expressed its opinion through a note. The company says that it has been registering a significant increase in water consumption on days with high temperatures, “which causes occasional fluctuations in supply and requires constant operational adjustments in distribution to guarantee service to the population”.
According to the company, the higher areas are the most affected in the metropolitan region, as the pressure on the network is lower. The lower regions, according to Sabesp, “continue to be supplied normally”.
On a day with a temperature considered “normal”, like last week, Sabesp produces around 66 thousand liters of water per second. In recent days, says the company, it has had to produce around 72 thousand liters per second.
In addition to the heat, the state of São Paulo is also experiencing a water crisis in its springs caused by the little rain in recent months.
