With Gio Queiroz, Brazil is called up for the U-20 Women's World Cup

The women’s soccer team was summoned, this Wednesday (27), for the U-20 World Championship, which will be held between August 10 and 28, in Costa Rica. The list of 21 players named by coach Jonas Urias has eight novelties in relation to the South American champion team in the category. Among them, forward Gio Queiroz, from Barcelona (Spain), who is with the main team in Colombia, to dispute the Copa América. With Gio Queiroz, Brazil is called up for the U-20 Women's World CupWith Gio Queiroz, Brazil is called up for the U-20 Women's World Cup

“Gio is an athlete who has been with the senior team since before the Tokyo Olympics. [Japão]. A player who plays in a very high level championship, like Espanyol, can certainly add a lot in a World Cup. She has been very present in Pia’s work [Sundhage, técnica da seleção adulta]. We have an alignment in relation to the game, we live together daily and talk about these players who move between categories, how they can contribute and at what stage they are to perform well and continue to develop. We see this call as a positive thing for everyone”, described Jonas, in a press conference.

Four more athletes have already been summoned by Pia, such as goalkeeper Gabi Barbieri, midfielder Yaya, defender Lauren and side Bruninha. The last two came to work with the coach in the main team and were champions of the Manaus International Tournament, in December, also alongside Gio.

Santos and São Paulo are the teams with the most players called up (four each), followed by Grêmio (three). Internacional, Ferroviária and Flamengo will be present with two athletes, while Atlético-MG, Corinthians and the Spanish Barcelona and Madrid CFF will have a representative on the team.

“Perhaps, in the history of national teams [femininas] of youth, in World Cup disputes, I’m sure it’s the generation with the most players working at a professional level in their clubs. This adds competitiveness, competitive ties that will contribute to better performance. There are numerous other factors, but being playing and living with high-level athletes on a daily basis is extremely important. A player from São Paulo, for example, will listen to tips from Formiga”, analyzed the under-20 coach.

The delegation leaves for Costa Rica this Sunday (31). Once there, he will play two friendlies before the World Cup. On August 2, the Brazilian women face the main female team of Dimas Escazú. On the 5th, they duel with New Zealand. Both matches will be in the city of Liberia.

Brazil is in Group A of the World Cup. The debut will be against Spain, on the 10th, at the National Stadium in San José. Three days later, the selection faces Australia, at Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium, in Alajuela. The participation in the first phase comes to an end on the 16th, again in San José, against the hosts Costa Rica. The top two in the bracket advance to the quarterfinals. The Brazilians are looking for an unprecedented title.
