The phrase from Marti that titles this text and by which Martí’s famous speech at the Cuban Lyceum in Tampa is also known, although it was delivered on a day like today 130 years ago, in this present it resounds very loud and clear.
That oratorical piece, one of the best known and cited, had been delivered, according to the Doctor in Historical Sciences Eduardo Torres-Cuevas, “Within the dissimilar actions that, in his time, Martí undertook to lay the foundations for the creation and preparation, first, of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and, second, of the Necessary War. It was vital at that moment in the history of Cuba, to create a party of a new type that did not respond to the old structures and that was capable of guiding the revolutionary cause ”.
Delivered in Tampa, a town that was then distinguished by Cuban emigration linked to the tobacco industry, that was an exhortation to unity with a view to achieving the independence of the Homeland, whose value was summarized in another also emblematic sentence contained in that speech: “From An altar must be taken to Cuba, to offer our life to it, and not as a pedestal, to rise above it. “
After giving more than enough reasons to join forces for the good of his beloved Island, Martí assured “My chest swells with pride, and I love my country even more from now on, and I believe even more from now on in its orderly and serene future. … ”
An orderly and serene present
And that nation dreamed of by the Master not only currently has a new Magna Carta with 60% of the original text modified from a constitutional reform -which included with the opinions of almost one million 700 thousand people who spoke about the project presented-; Today it is also studying the bill for a new Family Code, which is still an expression of that republic that embraces and includes.
Said project now includes the result of the processing and analysis of more than 500 opinions expressed during specialized consultations, between September and October, to 47 institutions and organizations throughout the country.
After the aforementioned specialized consultations, version 23 was prepared, approved by the commission in charge of preparing the project, as well as by the Council of Ministers.
Then, it was presented to the National Assembly on November 15, at which point it acquired the status of a bill.
It is about, as indicated by the Minister of Justice, Oscar Silvera Martínez, of a law with all rights for all people, whose project will be presented next month to the National Assembly of People’s Power for approval by the deputies and subsequent popular consultation.
After a new update of the project with the criteria expressed in that massive consultation, it will be discussed and approved again in a session of Parliament, and, finally, it will be the subject of a popular referendum, called by the National Assembly.
Just in these days and since November 17 – the date on which it was published – the deputies are analyzing the project of the new Family Code.
This, together with other norms and legal bodies, and linked in turn to the numerous renovations that the country is experiencing today, including in a prominent place the transformation of the neighborhoods, contributes to continue forging that Martian republic founded in January 1959 in that ” formula of triumphant love: With all, and for the good of all ”.
