With a financial deficit of 50.4 billion, public universities urgently need more resources for 2026

The association estimates that, since 2018, public universities have accumulated a financial deficit of 50.4 billion pesos. Of that figure, 42.6 billion corresponds only to state universities.

For this reason, he demanded that the federal government grant more resources to public universities during the course of the year.

“An urgent call to the Secretariats of Finance and Public Credit and Public Education to seek the necessary mechanisms that allow for the allocation of additional extraordinary resources in 2026 for public universities,” the association requested.

In 2026, he explained, a 3% larger public budget was approved for federal universities compared to the previous year. State companies will have 1.79% more resources. However, ANUIES estimates that this increase will be exceeded by inflation.

He warned that, with the financial crisis that universities have been going through for 10 years, it will be difficult for them to meet the federal government’s coverage goal, which consists of opening one million new spaces during the six-year term.

ANUIES assured that educational institutions agree to achieve the objectives of Plan Mexico, the government strategy to increase investment in the country that also contemplates increasing national scientific and technological production.

At the same time, President Claudia Sheinbaum promotes higher education and seeks to ensure that more young people can study a bachelor’s degree.
