The Colombian airline Wingo assured this Saturday that it maintains the operation to and from Venezuela, despite the fact that the US president, donald trumpstated this Saturday that the airspace of the South American country “will remain closed in its entirety.”
A company source told EFE that “Wingo maintains its operation between Colombia and Venezuela, given that we have not received official notification, through formal channels, about restrictions or closure of Venezuelan airspace.”
“We continue to constantly monitor the safety of that airspacein coordination with local and international authorities, and if conditions change we will immediately adjust our operation,” the information added.
In fact, Wingo flight P5 7010 left Bogotá after noon and will arrive this afternoon at the Maiquetía international airport, which serves Caracas.
Trump warning
For his part, the US president warned that airlines and pilots must take into account that Venezuelan airspace “will remain completely closed.”
“To all airlines, pilots, drug traffickers and human traffickers: we ask you to consider that The airspace over Venezuela and its surroundings will remain completely closed.. Thank you for your time! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP,” reads the president’s message, which does not clarify any circumstances related to the closure, at a time of high tension between the two countries.
Venezuela faces an air connectivity crisis as a result of the wave of flight cancellations caused by the notice issued a week ago by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in which it urged “extreme caution” when flying over Venezuela and the southern Caribbean in the face of what it considers “a potentially dangerous situation” in the area.
The government of President Nicolás Maduro on Monday gave airlines a period of 48 hours to resume operations, under the warning of canceling the permits of those that did not do so.
The warning was fulfilled on Wednesday, when the aeronautical authorities announced the revocation of the concessions of Iberia, TAP, Turkish Airlines, Avianca, Latam Colombia and Golwhom he accused of “joining the actions of terrorism” promoted by the United States.
For the moment, Copa, Wingo, Boliviana de Aviación and Satena, as well as the local companies Avior and Conviasa (state) maintain their operations in the South American nation.
