Willy Chirino: 50 years of music and an expo at the Miami History Museum

The new album contains 12 songs, most of which he wrote and duets with important artists such as Santa Rosa, the Cuban Leoni Torres, his wife Lissette and their daughter Jesse Chirino.

“The album took me a long time to release because I was tightening the screws,” Chirino says, sitting in a room at the History Miami Museum.

“We live in a world where what is released is simple, but I am from the old guard, from the old schoolas the Americans say,” says Chirino.

“I think that for the trajectory of an artist, to set a precedent, it has to be a record. A song is an apartment and a record is a house, that’s what I wanted to do, songs arranged inside an acetate or whatever “, he explained about I keep goingproduced by Nelson Albareda.

Also on this record, he clarifies, “are the cubatoneros.”

El Micha, Srta. Dayana, Lenier, Osmani García and Chacal join in the song Let them go now!written by Chirino ten years ago and now in a new version.

The cubatón, he says, “is a kind of reggaeton but what it has underneath is the Cuban conga, and I am the son of the Cuban conga and the guaguancó.”

Considered one of the creators of the Miami Sound along with Gloria Estefan, Chirino’s song Our day (It’s coming)from 1991, became a hymn for Cuban exiles, as was the award-winning homeland and life for those who took to the streets in Cuba on July 11, 2021 to protest against the government.

The History Miami Museum, where he spoke to the press today, is preparing the exhibition Willy Chirino: 50 years of musicwith Chirino’s personal items “never seen before”.

The exhibition, which will be inaugurated on January 27, according to a statement, will display his first guitar, lyrics of songs written in his own handwriting, and a Cuban flag signed by rafters detained at the Guantanamo naval base.

Also on display will be “clothes that have been part of my career as an artist, very personal items from my family, my father, my mother, and very important and beloved objects on a personal level,” details Chirino, born 75 years ago and who has made a successful career as a singer-songwriter, musician and music producer in the United States.

According to the museum, “the exhibit pays tribute to a life and musical career that spans generations and reflects Miami’s rich and complex history.”

“This expo is an event that one dreams of as a child and that in my case has come true, it is very beautiful,” says the artist, who on March 11, 2023 will star in the concert Willy Chirino: 50 years of musicat the James L. Knight Center in Miami.

Last October, a mural with his image was inaugurated that the Miami mayor’s office commissioned from Chilean artist Alexandra Seda, a work that measures 18.2 meters high (60 feet) and 16.5 meters (55 feet) wide.

This week, in West New York, specifically in New Jersey, a street will be named after him.

“It’s the third,” recalls Chirino, who already has a dedicated street in Miami and another in Hialeah, a city near the first.

“I feel very happy, I have reached this stage of my life marking several generations with my music and that is beautiful and it is not easy to achieve. I still love what I do,” said Chirino, who brought the famous song to salsa black stockingsby Joaquín Sabina, on his album Oxygenfrom 1991.
