The Minister of the Interior, Vicente Tiburcio Orbezospoke this Monday after the president’s announcement José Jerí about the expansion of state of emergency in Metropolitan Lima and the Constitutional Province of Callao, a measure that seeks to reinforce the Government’s response to the advance of organized crime.
From San Juan de Lurigancho, one of the districts hardest hit by insecurity and extortion mafias, the minister pointed out that the strategy to combat these attacks will be “reconsidered” and that the details will be announced in the coming days.
He announced that the National Police of Peru (PNP), through its different divisions, continues to deploy focused operations and intelligence work to dismantle criminal networks.
“The work of our Police is permanent and articulated. We are going to reinforce the strategy to confront the extortion attacks that affect hundreds of families and workers,” he indicated.
Regarding the debate on a possible mandatory social immobilization, Tiburcio was emphatic in denying that this measure is being evaluated. He recalled that the similar restrictions applied during the pandemic were exceptional and that the current scenario, although critical, does not justify a return to such strict mechanisms.
“I think that has been ruled out by the President of the Republic, unless at some point we touch on it again. At the Government level we have not discussed this issue of the curfew,” he stated, ruling out any immediate provision in that regard.
The Government reaffirmed that the state of emergency will allow police and military interventions to be strengthened, while protocols are adjusted to confront extortion organizations that have increased their attacks in districts such as San Juan de Lurigancho, San Martín de Porres and Callao.
