Wilhelm Brouwer Spijkers, businessman and former honorary consul, dies

He Consulate of the Principality of Monaco in the Dominican Republic reported this Tuesday death of the businessman and former honorary consul Wilhelm Brouwer Spijkersa relevant figure in the country’s business, diplomatic and cultural spheres.

According to a press releaseBrouwer died after suffering health complications.

He wake will be held at the San José de Calasanz Parish on Wednesday, November 26 at 9:00 am, followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 am The funeral will take place at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Life

Born in Arnhem and Nijmegen, Netherlands, Brouwer survived the ravages of the Second World War and later emigrated to Santo Domingo in 1954, a country to which he joined permanently.

In 1979 contracted marriage to Sonia Altagracia Villanueva Suedwith whom he had two sons: Alexander and Phillip Brouwer Villanueva.

Cultural and diplomatic contributions

His work was decisive in the promotion of culture and education in the country. Was president of APEC Cultural between 2015 and 2017, during whose management donated a piano of cola that has served for the musical training of generations.

He founded and presided over the Santo Domingo Bridge Club and was vice president of the Symphony Foundation.

Brouwer too wrote cultural articles in the newspaper Daily Listwhere he expressed his humanistic vision and his appreciation for Dominican cultural life.

In the diplomatic field, he held the position of Honorary Consul General of Lithuania since 1995 and was twice Dean of the Consular Corps accredited in Dominican Republic (2001-2003 and 2007-2009).

He received recognition from the Government of Lithuania, including the Order of the Grand Duke of Gediminasas well as the Order of Merit of Christopher Columbusawarded by the president Hipolito Mejia.

His career was also distinguished by the government of the Netherlands with the Orange-Nassau Order and for the Military and Hospitaller Order of Malta and the Order of Charles V.

Business legacy

In 1956 founded Industrial Constructora (Induca), leading company in aluminum carpentry which came to employ more than 400 families. He also promoted the creation of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of European Chambers in Dominican Republic.

In 2010the former president Leonel Fernandez gave him the Privileged Citizenship through Decree No. 7-10, recognizing their exceptional contribution to national life.
