The Widow’s Pension It is one of the state benefits that seeks to provide financial support to relatives of those who were affiliated with the old pension distribution system in Chile. To access this benefit, widowed spouses must meet a series of requirements established by the Social Welfare Institute (IPS).
First of all, as requirement, it is necessary that the marriage was contracted at least six months before the date of death of the pensioner or partial disability pensioner. In the case of old-age or total disability pensioners, the marriage must have been celebrated at least three years before, unless there are minor children, the widow has become pregnant or the death has been due to a common accident.
In addition to these requirements, the deceased must have registered at least 401 or more weeks of contributions for the widowed spouse to be able to access the Widow’s Pension. Likewise, the cause of death of the spouse must not generate a pension due to work accident or occupational disease.
For male spouses (widows), it is additionally required that they have been declared disabled by the Commission for Preventive Medicine and Disability (COMPIN) and that they have lived at the expense of the imposing deceased. Without this, they will not be able to access the Widow’s Pension.
As for who can apply for the Widow’s Pensionmust be people who are spouses (wives or husbands) of pensioners or deceased pensioners of the former Social Security Service, such as contributors to different funds of the old system, including: Private Employees (EMPART), Public Employees and Journalists, Merchant Navy National (ship crew and operators section), Municipal Employees of the Republic, Municipal Workers of the Republic, Municipal Employees of Santiago, National Horse Riding, and Employees and Workers of the Metropolitan Sanitation Works Company (department of workers and department of employees) .
