In 2026, Peru will still not reach the flow of tourists which was recorded in 2019 when 4.45 million visitors from abroad entered the country, warned the Peruvian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Apavit).
According to the president of the union, Patricia Campos, it is estimated that a similar number of people will arrive as this year, that is, around 3.8 million.
Why will pre-pandemic figures in tourism not reach?
The president of Apavit pointed out that one of the reasons why Peru will not yet recover its 2019 figures is linked to the crisis in Machu Picchu. These conflicts are mainly related to conflicts over the transportation concession.
Another reason, as he explained, is linked to insecurity and extortion that drive away potential tourists, who due to this type of situation decide to opt for other destinations such as Colombia, Chile and Argentina.
Next year’s elections will also have an impact on tourist arrivals to the country. Patricia Campos pointed out that the Unified Airport Use Fee (TUUA) that is currently applied at the Jorge Chávez Airport in Lima (Peru) to passengers on international connections, is another factor that affects the arrival of visitors.
For this reason, he considered that it is necessary to better promote Peru as a tourist destination and refer to security with sustainability. Likewise, he referred to the panorama of travel agencies and reported that more than 70% work informally, which is why he proposed to government authorities a greater simplification for their formalization.
