Today, the National Police is experiencing a day of sadness by saying goodbye to one of its most loyal and brave members: ‘Rigo’, a anti-explosive dog who dedicated six years of his life to protecting the security of the president and the Colombian people. In an emotional farewell ceremony, ‘Rigo’ received military honors before being subjected to euthanasia, due to a serious illness that had progressed irremediably.

Chief Mayor Javer Velandia, who was ‘Rigo’s’ caretaker throughout his career in the Police, in an interview with Noticias Caracol, shared details of his relationship with the canine. According to Velandia, ‘Rigo’ came into his life when he was only 9 months old and, since then, he became a inseparable companionboth at work and in your personal life.
«More than a work colleague, he was a life partner. In these six years, I spent more time with him than with my own family,” Velandia commented. Both shared moments of great adrenaline and risk, since their main mission was rule out possible explosives in high security events, such as those that took place at the Casa de Nariño, headquarters of the Colombian government.
‘Rigo”s work was essential, since, together with his caregiver, he guaranteed the safety of the President of the Republic.

The treatments to treat the illness of ‘Rigo’, the Police dog, were not successful
Unfortunately, ‘Rigo”s health was seriously affected when he began to suffer from bone cancer. Despite the treatments, the disease did not stop. «The cancer spread throughout his leg and is now moving towards his hip. To prevent him from continuing to suffer, euthanasia will be applied today,” explained Velandia, visibly affected by the departure of his partner.
As they explained, the dogs in the National Police They have a pension that is activated after 7 years, but ‘Rigo’ did not get to enjoy his retirement, since the illness took away the opportunity to rest after a life of service.
In his farewell, the canine was honored with full military honors that he deserved as a hero. The ceremony was an act of gratitude and respect for their dedication, bravery and loyalty. His work in the service of national security was fundamental, and his loss leaves a void that is difficult to fill for the National Police.
