Why is turkey consumption low in Mexico?

The holiday season (Christmas and New Year) has arrived, and with it the typical dishes of the season, especially turkey. However, although the turkey is a bird native to North America, specifically Mexico and the United States, it is not one of the preferred foods of Mexicans for the rest of the year.

According to the Center for Teaching, Research and Extension in Poultry Production (CEIEPAv), of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics (FMVZ), per capita consumption of turkey is barely 1.25 kilograms; and as we had already mentioned, 90% is only consumed during the Christmas season.

In contrast, the amount of chicken per inhabitant per year is approximately 33 kilos, according to the National Union of Poultry Farmers, stated Jorge Miguel Iriarte, coordinator of CEIEPAv.

In this situation the question arises:

Why is turkey consumption low in Mexico?

One of the factors that could have made its consumption difficult is that it is a large species, eight to 10 kilos, although currently smaller ones are handled, five to six kilos, he considers.

Added to this is the price. While a kilo of whole turkey costs approximately 150 pesos, a kilo of chicken breast is around 100 pesos.

Another factor is the coloration of the bird, since these are black animals and when removing their feathers you can see black dots that are not striking.

Benefits of turkey meat

The turkey is identified as “Creole or native” and takes five to six months to gain weight to reach a size suitable for consumption. It is a lean and easily digestible meat, qualities that make it a frequent recommendation by nutritionists.

In this sense, turkey and turkey are similar, so their low fat content, high protein content and low caloric level make them ideal for a balanced and healthy diet.

Its breeding is noble as it reaches its development in 12 to 14 weeks. The state of Yucatán is the main producer, followed by Puebla, the State of Mexico, Veracruz and Tabasco.
