Why France asked to cancel foreign debt of colonized countries

France Marquezthe vice president of Colombia, asked the United Nations (UN) that the external debt of the colonized countries be cancelled.

“We propose foreign debt forgiveness as historical reparation to the peoples who have suffered from colonialismthe transatlantic trade and enslavement”asked Márquez on his Twitter account along with a video that he published during his speech at the UN Permanent Forum on Afro-descendants, which took place on Monday, December 5.

“Advancing in equality and equity requires real commitments, investment, cooperation and will”he added.

In the forum as such, the Vice President said: “Our countries continue to pay external debt to colonizing countries and to those that have been committed to slavery, which have not allowed us to live in dignity.”

(Government will file a project to create the Ministry of Equality).

The meeting also discussed topics such as the racism, discrimination and human rights and agreements were reached to improve the living conditions of the Afro community.

And Márquez, specifically, also spoke of climate change and sustainability. On this he assured that “You couldn’t talk about climate justice without talking about racial and gender justice.”
