“Why don’t you remember us old people who fought for this?”

Pablo Curbelo Morales

HAVANA, Cuba. – “They don’t help anyone here, no one comes here and I’m having a very bad time, without medicine, without food and the house is collapsing on me,” denounces Pablo Curbelo Morales, an elderly Cuban who claims he was there for more than 20 years. “communist”.

Curbelo Morales, 78 years old, resides in a small house made of wood and cardboard, which is located on Paz Street, between Constancia and Lindero, in the Calleja neighborhood of the municipality. Orange Creek. The elderly man lives in extreme poverty as he must support himself with a 1,500 peso retirement pension.

“I want to ask the leaders of this country if they don’t know that there is a large percentage of old people who are earning a low pension that is not even enough to buy two pounds of chicken,” says the old man to CubaNet.

“Why were those of us over 70 years old taken away from the basic basket, chicken, eggs, the diets they gave us for illness?” he asks. “Why don’t you remember the old people who fought for this? Why did they throw us in the trash and take everything from us?” he continues.

Curbelo Morales explained that, like most of the elderly on the Island, the 1,500 pesos he receives after working his entire life is barely enough to survive the first five days of the month.

“It’s not enough for anything; Prices are sky high, you can’t live like that. “Most of us old people are dying of hunger,” he said.

Likewise, he explained that he recently had to go out into the street in search of “old boards and cardboard” to be able to repair his home. “With what I got I was able to change some rotten boards and put pieces of cardboard in the gaps. If I waited for the government I would already be dead,” he laments.

Curbelo Morales assures that he spent 12 years serving the Revolutionary Army, in which he enlisted after the arrival of power Fidel Castroin 1959.

“I was a communist for 20 years and after they put the pacemaker in, no one came to see me, so how can I feel? “I am totally disappointed because this government has put an end to everything that Fidel fought for.”
