Why does the US Embassy alert those who travel to Cartagena?

“The United States Embassy in Bogota cautions American citizens that they deserve extra precautions in areas of Cartagena where there is less police presence.”, the American embassy said in a press release, just in the days before the end of the year tourist season, and when the forecasts of the hotel unions warn a high number of visitors during the month of December.

(This is how you can apply for a temporary US work visa.)

“… There has been an increase in criminal activity throughout Cartagena as covid-19 restrictions have been lowered, and there have been several notable criminal incidents in the Chambacú neighborhood, the area east of the Caribe Plaza shopping center. and in the south of Cartagena “, adds the embassy from Bogotá.

Despite the call, The body does not present specific complaints about the effects on its citizens, it does not present figures on events of insecurity in Cartagena.

In the last hours the District responded.

“More than 200,000 foreigners have entered Cartagena during 2021, who have traveled throughout the city without any security problem. From the District, with the support of the national police, we have guaranteed the safety of all our visitors”, said David Múnera, secretary of the Interior of the city.

(The percentage of visas denied to Colombians by the United States increased).

According to Múnera, the indicators, in terms of criminal acts in the city, do not show a latent danger for tourists visiting the Heroica.

“We are surprised by the statements of the American embassy, since the District administration, in coordination with all the security forces, carries out a frontal fight against delinquency and all kinds of crimes”, assured the Secretary of the Interior.

This is not the first time that the United States has issued security appeals to its citizens. It has already done so with cities such as Medellín, Cali and Bogotá.

“In general we can affirm that our visitors have circulated throughout the city without notable or representative events in the matter of thefts, homicides, sexual exploitation, among other crimes”, said Múnera Cavadía.

The district administration invited all nationals and foreigners to visit Cartagena de Indias.

“This is a city that has all the guarantees of protection and care for our visitors, we are in a process of increasing operations, precisely we advance a Tourist Safety Council for the month that is coming, there is no risk”, the secretary pointed out.
