The abandonment of pets continues to be a painful reality in Colombia. Every day, dogs and cats are left to their fate in lonely streets, rural areas or national roads, victims of the indifference of those who one day promised to take care of them.
One of these cases occurred in the department of Tolima and was recorded on video by a couple traveling on a motorcycle. As they advanced along the road that leads from El Guamo to Neiva, they noticed something that broke their hearts: a dog was desperately running behind a car, trying to catch up with it.
The canine, visibly exhausted, did not stop following the vehicle where, according to witnesses, a couple and a child were traveling. The scene, recorded by the motorcyclists, showed the animal’s effort not to be left behind.
Moved by the situation, the motorcyclists decided to act. “Why did they leave it lying there?” the man can be heard demanding as they approach the car. The occupants, when confronted, responded that the dog “didn’t want to get on.”
However, at the insistence of witnesses, the driver of the car stopped driving. When the dog reached them, panting and exhausted, the motorcyclist told the driver: “Open him, open him, let’s see if he doesn’t want to get on.” In a matter of seconds, the animal entered the vehicle without hesitation, confirming that it did not want to be left behind, but quite the opposite: it was only looking to return to its family.
Outrage on networks and call to conscience
The video quickly spread on social networks, generating widespread rejection of those allegedly responsible for the abandonment. Users on social networks and animal rights organizations applauded the bravery of the couple who intervened, describing their action as a gesture of empathy.
In networks they recalled that there are alternatives such as responsible adoption, sterilization programs and voluntary surrender to animal protection entities, instead of condemning animals to a life of suffering.
