The results of the elections held on September 7 in the province of Buenos Aires give what to think
Havana.- This Sunday, in the Argentine fraternal, early legislative elections were held in the very important province of Buenos Aires. This is the territory in which 40 % of the electorate of the great southern country resides. The results were clearly adverse to the coalition headed by the president Javier Mileiwithin which his party decounts La Libertad advances (Lla), that raised libertarian ideas.
According to the most recent official data, these forces obtained 33 % of the votes, while the Peronists, grouped in the front HomelandThey reached 47 %. That result constitutes a boost to the current governor Axel Kicillof. With that triumph (and with former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner sanctioned), it seems difficult for some other Peronist leader to discuss Mr. Kicillof the presidential postulation in 2027.
Of course, as Cuban, I regret this setback suffered by the forces headed by Javier Milei. And it is that the current Argentine president has earned the enthusiastic support of people with democratic ideas that favor free enterprise and reject the funesto socialist statism. His words of firm rejection of the dictatorships of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua deserve our full thanks.
But more important than that relevance that he and his policies have had for some foreigners like us, they are the luminous perspectives that the administration today installed in the Casa Rosada of Buenos Aires has opened before the Argentines themselves. The policies advocated by the economist Milei have reactivated the country’s productive apparatus, promoted economic growth and admirable reduced inflation and national poverty indices.
But the aspirations of the libertarian are much more ambitious. Let’s not forget that, in the bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries, the Nation of the Plata became the most prosperous country in the world! This admirable achievement was obtained thanks to the policies of unrestricted respect for freedom and property that Juan Bautista Alberdi and his friends managed to capture in the Constitution of 1853.
And Milei, taking up those same policies, aspires to reissue that Argentine splendor by definitively, deficiently, the sterile statist ideas that ended that formidable boom And, in short, they produced the dire crises that Peronism and Kirchnerism exacerbated until they were taken to paroxysm. If the libertarian president succeeds in that effort, an example of a worldwide level would sit and would have achieved a victory of universal historical importance.
Returning to the results of the recent Buenos Aires vote, it should be remembered that she took place a few days after uncovering some recordings that, at least partially, questioned several characters from the nearby environment of Milei. This included his sister Karina, general secretary of the Presidency. According to Infobaethe most heard comment on the rows governors after knowing the defeat was: “The scandal of the coimas did not forgive.”
It has also affected, of course, that it was a local and partial choice, of those in which civic participation usually reduces, since the issues submitted to debate are not one of those who wake up the greatest interest within the citizenship. The official data indicate that this Sunday attended the polls just 61 % of the electoral roll of the largest Argentine province.
However, the libertarian setback has been recognized clearly and strictly by President Milei. The antisocialist president has chosen not to resort to unfounded complaints about alleged Electoral Amaños, as he did, for example (and without presenting any evidence to corroborate his sayings!), The leftist candidate Perdeker Luisa González in the last presidential ballot of Ecuador.
In the brief speech that Milei pronounced before his supporters gathered in the so -called “Lla bunker”, in the provincial capital of La Plata, he expressed important concepts. “Without any doubt, on the political level, today we have had a clear defeat,” he acknowledged without ambiguity. “Those things in which we have been wrong we will correct them,” he promised. And “the course,” he said, “is not going to modify.”
Unfortunately, adverse economic reactions to the Peronist victory have not been waiting. According to the prestigious newspaper The nationfrom Buenos Aires, the impact on the change market was immediate: “The dollar went up and in some banks the ceiling of the flotation band came to play in the morning.” For its part, the “country risk” could “overcome the 1,000 basic points.” Hopefully this tower alert Argentine voters for future elections, such as the national legislative elections of the October coming.
This adverse effect caused by this vote on the economic level has its logic. Hopefully this success achieved by Peronism last Sunday has a merely local and passenger character. Also that the lists of La Libertad advances and its allies, which, in the face of the national legislative elections of next October (already difference from Sunday’s elections in Buenos Aires) are headed by prominent politicians of the Mileista countryside, get greater favor within the electorate.
As for Milei himself, there is only one thing that I, as an admirer of his formidable government work that I am, I would dare to suggest: that moderates the vocabulary that sometimes uses to refer to his political adversaries. And otherwise, I hope that the admirable virtuous policies implemented in the economic field by the government he presides, continue to reap fair successes. This, I trust, can lead to what happened this Sunday is only the “swan song” of Argentine Peronism.
