In the last hours of this Thursday, Colombia lost one of its greatest scientists. Manuel Elkin Patarroyothe pioneering researcher in the development of the first synthetic vaccine against malaria, died at the age of 78.

The scientist, born on November 3, 1946 in Ataco, Tolima, Colombia, left a transcendental legacy in the scientific and health field.
Throughout his career, he stood out for his contribution to immunology, especially for being the creator of the first synthetic malaria vaccinea disease that affects millions of people around the world.
Manuel Elkin Patarroyo pays tribute after his death
The news of his death was confirmed by Gabriela Delgado through her X account, where she expressed her gratitude for his work in life.

For its part, in an official statement, the National University of Colombia also paid tribute to Patarroyo, highlighting his invaluable contribution to science and public health in the country.
The educational institution, where he was a professor of pathology and immunology, extended its condolences to the scientist’s family and expressed its gratitude for the work that allowed progress in the fight against malaria.
Manuel Elkin Patarroyo’s son, in an interview with Semana magazine, explained that his father died due to cardiopulmonary arrestafter having been facing various health problems.
