The World Health Organization (WHO) announced yesterday that it will hold an open forum to rename monkeypox after receiving criticism that it may be derogatory or racist. In a statement, it noted that it has already renamed two families, or clades of the virus, using Roman numerals instead of geographic areas, to avoid stigmatization. The Congo Basin version of the disease will be called Clade I and the West African version Clade II. The decision was made after a meeting of scientists this week and is in line with best practice in disease naming, which seeks avoid causing offense to any cultural, social, regional, professional or ethnic group and minimize any negative impact on trade, travel, tourism or animal welfare.
