WHO issues regional alert due to increase in cases and deaths from chikungunya

This Friday the epidemiological alert issued by the highest health authority worldwide, in view of the remarkable increase in cases and deaths from chikungunya in the Americas.

At the moment an expansion of the occurrence of the disease is observed beyond the historical transmission areas reported since 2014, highlights the release, released by the Ministry of Public Health.

In this sense, he mentions that this trend has been maintained during the first weeks of 2023in which this increase in cases and deaths “It has become even more evident, representing atypical behavior.”

Given this scenario, WHO urges Member States to continue strengthening surveillance, triage, diagnosis and timely and adequate treatment of chikungunya cases and other arboviruses. At the same time, calls for intensifying vector prevention and control actionsas well as the preparation of health care services to facilitate access for patients with these diseases.

He The first autochthonous case of chikungunya in Paraguay was reported in 2015. So far in the current epidemic, there is an increasing trend in case reports, above the historical threshold.

To the date, 34,659 cases classified as probable and confirmed have been reportedincluding 2,910 hospitalized patients and 34 deaths. Unlike previous years, in this outbreak 132 cases were reported in newborns, 4 of them deceased.
