The Executive made official a change in the country’s military leadership. Beginning January 1, 2026, Maj. Gen. César Augusto Briceño Valdivia will assume leadership of Joint Command of the Armed Forces.
This is established by a supreme resolution published in the Official Gazette The Peruvian.
The appointment was formalized by Supreme Resolution No. 101-2025-DE, published in the Legal Standards bulletin, which states that the new appointment will come into effect at the beginning of next year.
The Joint Command is the body in charge of the strategic planning and conduct of the country’s joint military operations.
In the same legal device, the Executive Branch terminated, also effective January 1, 2026, the appointment of Briceño Valdivia as Commander General of the Army, expressing recognition and gratitude for the services provided to the Nation during his management at the head of that institution.
The supreme resolution has the signatures of the President of the Republic, José Jerí Oréand the Minister of Defense, César Francisco Díaz Peche.
With this replacement, the Government begins 2026 with adjustments in the military high command, in a context marked by institutional reorganization and the need to strengthen coordination between the Armed Forces.
WHO IS BRICEÑO VALDIVIA?
He was born in Lima, on June 20, 1964. He entered the Chorrillos Military School in March 1983, graduating as a second lieutenant of Engineering in January 1987, being the Sword of Honor of the 9th Promotion “II Andrés Avelino Cáceres Promotion”.
He has been an instructor at the Chorrillos Military School and the Army Engineering School, being director of the Army Engineering School in 2013 and head of Army Education in 2014.
Operationally, he participated in the national pacification process and development support, serving as general commander of the 3rd Special Forces Brigade, Huallaga Front; director of Army Intelligence; general commander of the III Army Division; commander of the Southern Operational Command; general commander of the II Division of the Army and commander of the Center Operational Command.
He has a master’s degree in Military Sciences; He has completed a master’s degree in National Development and Defense at CAEN; He has a master’s degree in Business Administration from the ESAN University and has completed the Senior Management Program at the University of Piura and the ESAN School of Business Administration.
