Who is Nino Fraguela, the Cuban who will seek the World Swimming Triple Crown?

MADRID, Spain.- During the last days it has been revealed that the Cuban triathlete Nino Fraguela, 61 years old, will try to swim the section between Catalina Island and Long Beach, California, as last stage to reach the World Swimming Triple Crown.

But this is not the first great challenge for Fraguela. At the end of July 2018, he managed to complete the Enduroman, considered the most difficult Triathlon in the world, since you have to swim across the English Channel.

For this competition he began by running 144 kilometers, from London to the English coast of Dover. From there she swam 47 kilometers to the French coast, crossing La Mancha. And then he cycled 300 kilometers to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

With this, Nino became the first Cuban, and the only one to date, to swim across the English Channel. In addition, he also reached the world record for the person who has done it the oldest.

For one of his personal challenges, in 2017, he swam 25 kilometers, without a cage, in waters where sharks abound, including dangerous bull sharks.

To get the World Triple Crown of Swimming, Fraguela will also swim in shark waters. He will have to swim the stretch between Catalina Island and Long Beach, California; as the last phase of this title. The first was done in September 2021, where he also crossed the English Channel, with the added merit of having done it with just a swimsuit, in sea temperatures between 15 and 16 degrees, when triathlonists generally cross it with a neoprene suit. , to protect the body from the cold.

For the second stage, in March 2022, he swam all 21 Manhattan bridges, spanning 47 kilometers.

Nino Fraguela, graduated in Biochemistry in Havana and a great defender of the environment, has lived in France since he was 28 years old. There he lives with his wife and two daughters.
