María Luisa Alcalde holds a degree in Law from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
She holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Labor Law from the University of California at Berkeley.
Resume
Before holding public office, María Luisa Alcalde was a research assistant at the Institute of Legal Research at UNAM, from 2008 to 2009.
In 2008, she also collaborated on a Smile project to support vulnerable communities in India.
From 2009 to 2011 he served as legal assistant at the 79th Criminal Court of the Superior Court of Justice in Santa Martha Acatitla, Federal District.
In 2011 he joined Morena, representing young people and students, where he actively participated in promoting the “National Regeneration Movement.”
In 2012 she was elected as a federal deputy, where she was secretary in the Labor and Social Security Committee, concluding her assignment in 2015.
She was appointed as the head of the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), a position she held from 2018 to mid-June 2023.
On June 19, 2023, she was appointed as the new head of the Ministry of the Interior, replacing Adán Augusto López.
During her time at the Ministry of Labor, Luisa María Alcalde focused on increasing the minimum wage, promoting a reform in the area of union freedom, and closing the Conciliation and Arbitration Boards to turn them into Federal Conciliation and Labor Registry Courts. In addition, she managed to incorporate into the formal sector workers who were contracted through outsourcing, without any benefits.
She arrived at the Ministry of the Interior just before turning 36. The young millennial became the second woman to head this department, in charge of the country’s domestic policy, after retired minister Olga Sánchez Cordero headed it from December 2018 to August 2021.
At the Segob, Luisa María Alcalde supported each of the initiatives presented by President López Obrador, such as the transfer of the National Guard to the Ministry of National Defense; the creation of the Pension Fund for Welfare, as well as the reform of the Judicial Branch.
