AREQUIPA, Peru – The Second lottery to assign H-1B visas remaining for fiscal year 2025 was announced by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
The U.S. Congress authorizes a total of 85,000 H-1B visas for foreign professionals each year. Of these, 65,000 are available for general professionals, while the remaining 20,000 are for those who hold a master’s degree from a U.S. university.
“In March, USCIS carried out an initial random selection from among appropriately submitted electronic registrations for the fiscal year 2025 H-1B maximum statutory visa number, including beneficiaries eligible for the advanced degree exemption (also known as the master’s degree exemption),” a statement on the agency’s official website states.
USCIS has now initiated a second random selection from among properly submitted electronic records.
“We recently determined that we would need to select additional records for unique beneficiaries in order to meet the regular numerical allocation of visas for fiscal year 2025,” the statement said.
USCIS will soon conduct a selection process randomly select additional unique beneficiary registrations from among those previously submitted electronically and will notify prospective petitioners with registrations selected in this second round of selection that they are eligible to file an H-1B petition.
“We will not conduct a second screening for the advanced degree exemption, as sufficient requests for the advanced degree exemption have already been screened and sufficient requests have been received,” the statement said.
The initial window for filing applications for the 2025 H-1B visa quota opened on April 1 and closed on June 30. In May, USCIS had reported a 40% decrease in applications compared to previous years.
