The first councilor of Arequipa, Angel Linares Portilla could assume the mayoralty of the Provincial Municipality of Arequipa temporarily to drive the municipal Council in the next few hours. In communication with La República, Linares commented that he was surprised by the news.
The deputy mayor said that he had undergone a health operation and that he was currently in the process of recovering at his home, for which he had no prior knowledge of the possible sentence.
He added that he did not imagine that he could assume the position and that he also does not believe that he will intervene with any change because it is already the end of the year, and there is practically only one month left to complete the transfer process that has already begun.
He clarified the panorama of what would have to happen and said that he would contact the manager of the municipality to see the steps that must be taken from now on. “All councilors should be summoned to see the suspension of the mayor,” said Linares.
Finally, he was consulted about the sentence imposed on Omar Candia and said that he was sorry and that he thought they would only give him a few years in suspended prison.
