Who are the Spaniards arrested for alleged violent plans against the government?

The Venezuelan government has arrested two Spanish citizens. The Minister of the Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello, linked the men to alleged violent plans against President Nicolás Maduro. He also said that they belong to the National Intelligence Center of Spain, although the agency denied this.

Diosdado Cabello, Minister of the Interior and Justice, announced on September 14 the arrest of two Spanish citizens, allegedly involved in plans against the government of Nicolás Maduro. The men, aged 35 and 32, were identified as José María Basoa and Andrés Martínez Adasme, respectively.

Cabello linked them “directly” to the “Spanish National Intelligence Center,” although Spain later denied it.

Spanish government sources have denied this ABC that the two arrested belong to the CNI. From Foreign Affairs, the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela has sent a message to the Government to be able to have access to the detainees, verify their identities and see what charges they are accused of, according to Angie Calero.

Cabello has claimed that together with the CIA they were planning to assassinate Maduro, Delcy Rodríguez and himself. He also accuses them of a plan to assassinate the mayor of Upata, Yulisbeth García.

Two profiles on Linkedin

Under these names there are two profiles on Linkedin, both from Bilbao. Basoa’s profile states that he is a “senior technician in the installation, repair and maintenance of gas, heating, plumbing and climate control installations” with experience in Spain and Germany.

Martínez Adasme’s, much less complete, simply states that he is from Bilbao and that he is an unemployed person looking for opportunities.

Macro-operation against opponents and agents

Their arrests came as part of a major operation against the Venezuelan opposition, in which 400 rifles were seized – which Cabello said came from the US – and two other US citizens were arrested, who the regime says are linked to the CIA, and another Czech citizen.

In addition, “terrorists” who were planning to “throw grenades” at the Argentine embassy were reportedly arrested.
