The person in charge of access to medicines of the World Health Organization, Mariangela Simao, announced that the Indian vaccine against COVID-19 called Covavax, which is produced under license from the pharmaceutical company Novavax, has been approved.
This drug is developed by the Serum Institute of India and is part of the COVAX distribution system, so its approval is expected to boost efforts to vaccinate more people in lower-income countries.
This vaccine has two doses and a refrigeration system between 2 and 8 degrees, which allows it to be preserved in commercial freezers and does not need a specialized system that does not exist in all regions.
“Vaccines continue to be one of the most effective methods of protection against serious forms and death caused by SARS-COV-2, despite the appearance of new variants,” said the specialist, who invited people to keep vaccinating around the world.
According to the WHO, this vaccine will help 41 countries that have not yet been able to immunize 10% of their population to advance in that goal.
