The World Health Organization (WHO) presented a new plan to fight the pandemic that focuses on the least developed countries and that requires 23.4 billion dollars in financing to start work during the next twelve months at a global level.
In a statement it is detailed that the ACT accelerator requires this money to help these countries fight the virus and added that the amount of resources requested is “miniscule” compared to the economic losses that the planet has experienced in the last two years of pandemic.
The plan will focus on “equitable access to covid-19 tests, treatments and vaccines” to prevent the pandemic from continuing and new risks such as the emergence of “new, more dangerous variants that could escape the means of fighting the disease ”.
The WHO trusts the support of the international community for this initiative considering that “only 0.4% of the tests and 0.5% of the vaccines applied worldwide were carried out in low-income countries, although they represent 9% of the world’s population ”.
