Which countries want Russia to remain in the UN Human Rights Council?

MIAMI, United States. – Although this Thursday the United Nations approved the expulsion from Russia of its Human Rights Security Council based on the crimes committed by the Kremlin in Ukraine, 24 countries opposed Russia’s suspension, including, as expected, Cuba.

From the Latin American region, Bolivia and Nicaragua also seconded Russia. Venezuela, for its part, could not vote because due to the non-payment of its quotas it does not have that right.

From the rest of the world, another 21 countries supported Russia’s permanence in the UN Human Rights Council: Algeria, Belarus, Burundi, Central African Republic, China, Congo, North Korea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan , Laos, Mali, Syria, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zimbabwe and Russia itself.

Despite the opposition of the group of 24 countries, the resolution was approved with 93 votes in favor.

On the other hand, 54 countries in the world abstained. In this case, Brazil, El Salvador and Mexico are counted in the Latin American region.

The draft resolution presented to the Human Rights Council specifies that the multinational body is “gravely concerned” by reports of “serious and systematic violations and abuses of human rights” and “violations of international humanitarian law” committed by Russia during his invasion of Ukraine.

“Russia should not have a position of authority in a body whose purpose, whose very purpose, is to promote respect for human rights. It’s not just the height of hypocrisy, it’s dangerous,” US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at Thursday’s session.

It is not the first time that Cuba supports or avoids condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the United Nations. at the beginning of march the Cuban government abstained when voting on a resolution condemning the Kremlin’s actions in the United Nations General Assembly.

That resolution, which was not binding, received only five votes against (Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Eritrea).

Only a day before, the regime in Havana had ratified its support for Russia, during an emergency session of the UN General Assembly in which the majority of the member states of the organization condemned the Russian invasion.

Likewise, the Island Government had previously voted against holding the debate sessions that ended with the resolution condemning Moscow.
